CyTOF gives insights into the pathophysiology of diseases and allows the discovery of novel targets or biomarkers. Although, profiling of immune subsets is one of its most popular applications, fast development of this technique allows a broadening to other fields.

Mass cytometry has research applications in medical fields including hematology and oncology and it has been used in studies of hematopoiesis, cell cycle, cytokine expression, and differential signaling responses.
